News Release May 8, 2009

Leading South Australian photographer Tait Schmaal has won the 2009 Australian Star Prize for Agricultural Photography.

The competition organised by the Australian Council of Agricultural Journalists (ACAJ) recognises the best photographers from around the country each year.

The winning photo of a young girl in a field with a backdrop of ominous rain clouds was taken by Tait for the Adelaide Advertiser. It was part of a portfolio he submitted to win the Telstra Bigpond Rural Media Photographer of the Year in South Australia.

A strong field of entries in the national competition was judged by Jim Fenwick, retired Pictorial Editor of The Courier-Mail in Brisbane.

“The winning image was truly striking. It was beautifully shot with the light balance of the girl and the cloudy sky superb,” Mr Fenwick said.

A photo taken by Bob Garnant of The Countryman Newspaper in Western Australia was chosen as Australian runner-up.This action image captures a horse leaping over another horse and rider lying prone on the ground.

It was judged best photo in the Rural Media Association of Western Australia annual awards.
